Audience retention in video is the percentage of viewers who are still watching at a given point. A retention graph shows, second by second, where people drop off. For the algorithms on TikTok, Reels and YouTube it’s the main quality signal: content that keeps viewers watching gets further waves of reach, while content people abandon after 2 seconds dies.
Where do videos lose viewers most often?
Right at the start. The first 1-3 seconds (the hook) can filter out half the audience before anything has happened. The second typical drop-off comes when the video starts ‘selling’: the logo, the offer, a long spiel about the company. That’s why effective Reels lead with value and bring the brand in along the way. When we analyse retention graphs in UGC campaigns, we cut sections more often than we shoot new ones: a shorter video with steady retention usually beats a longer one with sharp drops.
How can you improve retention?
A stronger opening, faster editing (a change of shot or framing every 1-2 seconds, which is where B-roll comes in), subtitles (many viewers watch with the sound off) and cutting everything that doesn’t move the video forward. Then test it on data: two variants on the same topic, and the graph picks the winner.
